Horse Racing History

Horse Racing is one of the human being’s most antique diversions. Its origins lie in the 12th century and for thousands of years these races flourished as the most popular and traditional sport of Kings and the nobility. Today Horse racing is the majestic show that captivates many hearts.

Among the North American Horse Racing major and biggest events we have The Triple Crown which is a series of three races (all for 3-year old thoroughbred horses), consisting of the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes.

The Kentucky Derby, is a race held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, on the first Saturday in May. The race is one and a quarter miles (2 km) at Churchill Downs.

The Preakness Stakes is a 1-3/16 mile race (1.91 km) held on the third Saturday in May each year at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Belmont Stakes is the third and final leg of the Triple Crown held every June at Belmont Park in Belmont, New York. It is a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) race.

Betting

Here is a brief description of the most common wager types available at most of the race tracks in North America and Canada.

Wager Types:

  1. Win - you bet on your horse to finish first on the selected race.
  2. Place - you bet on your horse to finish second on the selected race.
  3. Show - you bet on your horse to finish third on the selected race.
  4. Across the Board - you bet on your horse to win, place and show in the same race. If your horse finishes anywhere in the first three positions you win.

Exotic wagers (Exacta, Exacta Box, Trifecta, Trifecta Box)

  1. Exacta - You bet on two horses to finish first and second in exact order on the same race. For example: a $2 Exacta with 3 and 5 means that horse#3 must win and horse #5 must finish second.
  2. Exacta Box - you pick from 2 to 6 horses to finish first and second, in either order. For example, a $2 Exacta Box with 3 and 5 costs twice as much ($4), because of the possible combinations. The bet is a winner if the final order finish is either 3-5 or 5-3.
  3. Trifecta – You bet on three horses to finish first, second and third in exact order on the same race. A $2 straight Trifecta 4-5-6 is a winner bet only if the final order of finish is exactly 4-5-6.
  4. Trifecta Box - of three horses such as 4-5-6 costs $6 because it includes six possible winning $1 combinations. The box pays off if your three selections finish in the top three positions in any order. The cost of a $1 Trifecta box is equal to the number of combinations multiplied by $1.
